Training Neighbors to Strengthen Communities

Training-Neighbors-to-Strengthen-CommunitiesResidents from the East Campus, Bethany, University Place and Havelock Neighborhoods participated in the resident leadership development training called Community Engagement Initiative (CEI) offered by NeighborWorks Lincoln (NWL) over the last five months. The training offers tools and techniques to develop and enhance resident leadership skills. CEI provides a framework for hands-on learning and a forum for discussing specific neighborhood issues, sharing of best practices and identifying solutions to neighborhood problems. Guest speakers and NWL staff facilitated a series of sessions, which included such topics as mapping community assets; building winning teams; keeping cool in conflict; recruitment and retention; using planning to create action.

Residents from the four neighborhoods completed over 15 hours of leadership development training on September 8th, 2012. The participants from each neighborhood will create their own respective action plans for a neighborhood improvement project that will be completed in the next year. The three action plans will be submitted to NWL in the form of a mini-grant and each project will receive up to $3,000 to assist with the implementation and completion of the projects.

NWL has worked to develop the training with the support of NeighborWorks America, the Cooper Foundation and the Lincoln Community Foundation. Neighborhood groups are currently being recruited to participate in the training, which will be offered again in the spring of next year.

Opening Doors in Our Community

NeighborWorks Lincoln is a non-profit organization dedicated to community revitalization through an active partnership of resident leaders, private businesses and public officials. We open doors for people to achieve their dreams of home ownership and for others who desire a safe and attractive neighborhood.

I wasn’t sure how to move forward, but then I heard about NeighborWorks. It is truly an amazing program…I hope more people use this great service to help themselves and to help Lincoln look better. Thanks, NWL!
