Your Neighborhood Needs You

There are an expanding number of concerns in Lincoln's core neighborhoods. Often times the roadblocks are found in regulations, laws and enforcement. The Lincoln Policy Network examines issues that are causing problems in neighborhoods or limiting the implementation of effective solutions.

The success of the Network relies on a dedicated group of neighborhood residents, business and property owners, landlords, REALTORS, non-profit organizations, and representatives from City offices that have an interest in preserving the integrity of the City's core neighborhoods. The goal of the group is to identify problems, formulate solutions, and implement plans to improve neighborhood conditions through new legislation or changing existing law or ordinances.

The Network has been working closely with City Council representatives on such issues as increasing housing code violation fines, maintaining 6" weed ordinance, upholstered furniture ordinance, code enforcement issues, graffiti ordinance and city-wide mandatory trash ordinance.

If you have concerns about continuous problem properties or other neighborhood issues, please get involved by joining the Lincoln Policy Network.

Home Depot Landscaping Project in Malone

On March 26th, 2009, NeighborWorks® Lincoln (NWL) and The Home Depot partnered to complete two neighborhood beautification projects in the Malone Neighborhood. Thirty volunteers from The Home Depot and two NWL staff members spent three hours planting new bushes, weeding, trimming trees and mulching at 23rd & T Street and at 604 N. 23rd. Lincoln Parks & Recreation
Department provided the mulch for the projects.

Volunteers also conducted a litter clean-up in portions of the neighborhood. The Home Depot donated $500 for bushes/plants, mulch, yard tools, and trash bags. This event is the first of many projects planned for the year. This project is part of a continued effort to encourage social engagement in the Malone/Hawley Neighborhoods. NWL has been working with residents and partnering businesses and agencies to conduct numerous neighborhood revitalization activities over the past year. These community engagement activities include litter clean-ups, graffiti clean-ups, park beautification, community mural and landscaping projects. If you want to get involved, have questions or have other neighborhood project ideas please contact Shawn Ryba at 477-7181 or sryba@nwlincoln.org
